Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Everything about Gastric Sleeve Surgery

The gastric sleeve procedure, also known as a sleeve gastrectomy, is a surgical procedure to help patients lose weight. During surgery, the surgeon will remove about 80% of the stomach in order to reduce the patient’s food intake while still allowing for the full absorption of nutrients. Our clinic performs the procedure laparoscopically to ensure smaller incisions and quicker recovery time.

The gastric sleeve, or sleeve gastrectomy, is minimally invasive and involves the removal of a part of the stomach. Typically, patients experience less hunger after our surgeons remove the portion of the stomach that produces ghrelin, which is a hormone that makes people feel constantly hungry.

Gastric sleeve surgery leaves behind a sleeve-shaped section, which is then sealed closed with staples and reinforced. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 1 hour. Although Dr. Hazrati’s surgical expertise minimizes the risks, potential gastric sleeve complications still exist.

These complications include staple separation, leakage, bleeding, or the emergence of acid reflux. As we noted above, complications are rare in our clinic, but they do happen. However, this is true of many surgical procedures and patients; it’s not specific to just those who undergo weight-loss surgery.
